Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s Contract Termination May Test Impact of Diarra Ruling


In a context marked by the recent CJEU “Diarra” ruling and FIFA’s subsequent amendments to its transfer regulations, Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa announced on 21 August 2025 that he had unilaterally terminated his employment contract with the South African side of Mamelodi Sundowns FC, effective 1 August 2025, and referred the dispute to the FIFA Football Tribunal. The player, who recently impressed at the FIFA Club World Cup and won the award for the tournament’s best goal, claims he had just cause to end the agreement.
