Class Action Targets FIFA’s Transfer Rules Following CJEU Diarra Ruling


Following the 2024 Diarra ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Justice for Players Foundation has initiated a landmark class action against FIFA and several national associations, alleging that unlawful transfer rules caused systemic financial harm to tens of thousands of professional footballers.

On 4 August 2025, a Dutch foundation named Justice for Players (JfP) filed a collective action before the District Court of Midden-Nederland against FIFA and multiple national football associations, including the KNVB. The action seeks compensation on behalf of an estimated 100,000 current and former professional footballers who played for clubs in the EU or UK since 2002 and whose earnings were allegedly suppressed due to FIFA’s transfer regulations.
