The Entry of Iranian Women into Stadiums: An End or a Beginning?

Since the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran, women’s entry into football stadiums has been banned due to social, religious or political concerns. This restriction lasted nearly 40 years, from 1979 until 2018. The opening of stadium doors to women in Iran stemmed from the support of FIFA, the social movement by women, and human rights activism. Today, Iranian women can attend international matches and national leagues as spectators. This article explores the reason behind this restriction, FIFA’s efforts to address it and the current status of female spectators in football stadiums.
