Facts

According to the regulations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (FWC 2022) issued by FIFA, the top four national teams from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) directly qualified for the FWC 2022, while a fifth slot had to be allocated through a single play-off match between the fifth placed team and a team from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). In the FWC 2022 Qualifiers, the Ecuadorian national team secured the fourth direct qualification place, ahead of the Peruvian, Colombian and Chilean national representative teams. 

Before those events, Ecuadorian national authorities, however, found in investigations, that a player (Player) who had participated in the FWC 2022 Qualifiers and notably played two matches against the Chilean national team had obtained Ecuadorian nationality through a falsified birth certificate.
