Football and Homophobia: A Social and Legal View in light of the Brazilian Context

[1] The present study aims to analyze some aspects of the proximity between football and homophobia in Brazil, as well as describe the latest developments in terms of legal discipline (both Lex Sportiva and national legislation) regarding the topic.

“There is a prevailing notion in Brazil, according to which football is utterly democratic, and the passion for the sport creates an environment for overcoming differences. However, what we have constantly witnessed in our country is precisely the opposite. It is the propagation of prejudice, racism, homophobia and sexism.”[2]

Claudia Ferrari’s statement describes a regrettable (yet true) facet of sport in Brazil: episodes of discrimination arising from color, race and sexual orientation still take place almost as naturalized behavior.
