Creation of the Saudi Sports Arbitration Center

The sports justice, and in particular the football justice, becomes an urgent matter to be dealt with on a day-to-day basis by the international and national sports federations. Nowadays, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is re-organising the sports stakeholders in line with the best international practices. This article aims to introduce the newly established Saudi Sports Arbitration Center (SSAC). It will also shed light on a couple of remarkable decisions. The SSAC is established based on the model of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Although the center is still newly established, it has started to be the right Sports Court of Justice for the country.

The establishment of the SSAC

In October 2015, the Saudi Sports Arbitration Center was established by the decision of HH. Abdullah bin Musaed bin AbdulAziz Al Saud, the President of the KSA Olympic Committee. The main aim of its establishment was (i) to enhance the quality of the sports industry in the country by creating a competent sports judicial body, and (ii) to secure the settlement of sports disputes between the different sports stakeholders in the KSA with absolute equity and equality governed by a code and procedural rules.

The SSAC is established in accordance with the international and the Saudi Olympic Charters, the rules and regulations of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and the Saudi Arbitration System.[1]  The headquarters of the SSAC are located in Riyadh and the panels may sit in the headquarters or in any city of the KSA.
