On 4 February 2020, CAS partially upheld Boca Juniors’ appeal and ordered fellow Argentine side River Plate to play its next two Copa Libertadores matches behind closed doors. Additionally, River Plate was confirmed as the 2018 Copa Libertadores winner.

In October 2018, Boca Juniors and River Plate won the respective semifinals of the 2018 edition of the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores (the highest level of competition in South American club football), qualifying for the final to be played in two legs at the respective clubs’ home stadiums in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The first leg was played without incident on 11 November 2018, and the second leg of the 2018 Copa Libertadores final between the two Buenos Aires teams was initially set to take place on 24 November 2018 at River Plate’s home ground (the Match).
